New Year, New Lifestyle, New Housemates

We are now well into 2007 and many people have set off with the intention of making some positive changes to their lifestyles. This can mean any number of things. Nearly everybody has at some New Year or another promised themselves that they will lose weight, get fit and eat more healthily, but the New Year is also a time when people make much bigger decisions.
The New Year is one of the most popular times for looking for a career change. We all want bigger and better things in the material world that we live in, and what was good enough for us last year, we are unlikely to be happy with next.
What does a new career involve? Well very often it may mean moving house, either moving out from living with parents, or changing location completely. Not only is this a huge step in terms of the financial responsibility involved, particularly if moving away from the security of a parent's home for the first time, but also very daunting when moving to another area where often you may not know anybody.
One of the ways to overcome both of these problems is to share a house with other people in a similar situation. In todays housing market, most people, particularly young people will appreciate the financial benefits of sharing the costs of renting or buying and running a house. It simply is not possible for the average young worker to run their own place, so from this point of view, finding housemates to share a property with is vital.
Often overlooked however is the benefit that sharing a house or flat with people that you really get on with can help with settling into a new area. After all, very few of us are confident and comfortable enough to simply throw ourselves into a social scene that had previously been operating very effectively without us. Finding people to share your house with who can join in with social activities is likely to increase the chances of the transition to a new job in a new area being successful.
Traditionally, room mates were found by advertising in the local newspaper and prospective housemates applied by replying to the ad. It seems a little strange that one of the most important factors in making a move to a new area successful - the people that you will live with and the social life that you will have are placed as secondary factors to finding an affordable roof, regardless of the other people who are living under it.
The internet provides the perfect media for meeting new people, and one of the most obvious references to this is the success of Internet Dating Sites. Once upon a time, Dating companies were seen as an entity full of the sad, lonely and desperate. In 2007 we all know somebody who has met their partner through a dating site. It seems that it would only be a matter of time before somebody took this concept of creating a safe and secure e-community for the house share market, and what better way to approach a move into a new area than by moving in with people that you know you are already going to get on with.
